Properties |
SWIDON® (Nitrazepam) has
marked sleep inducing properties that over shadow the
anxiolytic and muscle relexant properties it shares with
all benzodiazepines.
SWIDON® has inhibitory effect on the limbic
structures involved in the control of affective
reactions (the nucleus amygdalae and the hippocampus in
particular) on the thalamus, hypothalamus and spinal
interneurons, all of which are structures intimately
linked with the wake system. |

Indications |
SWIDON® is indicated in most etiological
forms of insomnia, especially: |
Purely psychogenic insomnia caused by irritability,
nervous tension, overwork, conflicts, worrying or
anxiety. |
Insomnia of neurotic or psychotic origin, possibly in
conjunction with specific treatment of any organic
condition. |

Precautions |
The mutual potentiation between
alcohol and SWIDON® may produce unforeseeable
reactions in some patients. Alcoholic drinks should
therefore be avoided as long as the drug is exerting an
effect. In the elderly, dosage should be adopted to the
increased sensitivity usual in such patients.
If SWIDON® is combined with centrally acting
drugs, it should be borne in mind that their effect may
be intensified. The established medical principle of not
prescribing drugs of any kind in early pregnancy except
when absolutely necessary should also be borne in mind. |
